Dies ist eine Reise vom einfachen Nähkästchen zu einer kleinen Steampunk Truhe. Die Scoreboard-Stanzen von Eileen Hull eigenen sich hervorragend zum Bauen von angepassten 3D Objekten. Für dieses Projekt habe ich lediglich die Cantilever-Nähkästchen Stanze und die Journal Stanze zur Konstruktion sowie die Nadelbuch-Stanze für das Minibuch und weitere Stanzen zur Verzierung eingesetzt.

This is a journey from a straight forward Sewing Box to a small Steampunk Chest. Eileen Hull’s Scoreboard-Dies are perfect for building altered 3D Objects. For this project I used only the Cantilever Sewing Box Die and the Journal Die for construction as well as the Needlebook Die for the minibook and other dies for embellishment.

Die Steampunk Truhe ist aus verschiedenen Teilen zusammen gesetzt. Die Bilder oben zeigen das zu entfernende Vorderteil, das 3 Boxen zur Aufbewahrung hat, aber gleichzeitig als Stütze für den umklappbaren Teil dient. Dieser besteht aus der Ablagefläche oben sowie der Tafel mit der Aufschrift ‚Lost Found‘. Im umgeklappten Zustand hat man erneut eine stabile Ablagefläche.

This Steampunk Chest consists of several units. The pictures above show the removable front part. It has 3 boxes for storage but also works as a support for the inclinable part. This consists of the worktop and the bill board ‚Lost Found‘. When reversed you have another usable worktop.

In der Truhe selbst befindet sich die Mechanik des Cantilever-Nähkästchens. Hier sind jeweils drei Boxen nebeneinander in drei Schichten angeordnet und öffnen sich von oben nach unten. Die obere Lage ist an den Seiten und an der hinteren Wand fixiert, damit die Konstruktion ihre Stabilität behält auch wenn etwas mehr in den Boxen gelagert wird.

In the chest itself is the mechanic of the Cantilever Sewing Box. Here I placed 3 boxes next to each other in 3 layers and it opens from top to bottom. The top layer is fixed to the sides and the back of the chest to give the construction stability even when you store heavier things.

Die Ausführung – The Process

Ich zeige hier viele Bilder, wie die Truhe entstanden ist, allerdings werde ich nicht im Detail alles erläutern. Wichtig ist, dass ich für den Bau immer wieder die Kanten des Journals genutzt habe und auch die Höhe als Standard verwendet habe. Wenn aber jemand Fragen hat, beantworte ich diese gerne.

I will show many pictures of the process how the chest was constructed. But I will not go into details. Important to know is that I used the journal and it’s scored edges again and again for the build as well as the height as reference. If anyone has questions I am more than happy to answer them.

Das Herz der Steampunk-Truhe sollte die Mechanik des Nähkästchens sein. Also habe ich erstmal viele Boxen ausgestanzt und zusammengebaut. Damit konnte ich verschiedene Varianten ausprobieren. Dann habe ich die Boxen mit Spiegelkarton von innen und aussen beschichtet. Diese habe ich vorher mit der 3D Prägeschablone Foundry nach dem Ausstanzen geprägt und mit Alkohol-Inks, Distress Crayons und Distress Paint eingefärbt. Dann habe ich alle Boxen für später zusammengebaut. Wichtig ist, dass die Mechanik funktioniert und stabil ist !

As the mechanic of the Cantilever Sewing Box was going to be the heart of the Steampunk Chest I die-cut and assembled a lot of the boxes. This way I was able to try out many variations. Then I layered the boxes with silver mirror cardstock which was die-cut first, embossed with the 3D Embossing Folder Foundry and coloured with Alcohol-Inks, Distress Crayons and Distress Paint. Assembling all the boxes I made sure that the mechanic worked and the stability was guaranteed.

Die Seitenwände und die Rückwand der Truhe habe ich aus dem Journal geschnitten. Beim Fixieren der Boxen muss man auf den richtigen Abstand zur Seite hin und auf die richtige Höhe achten, da die Mechanik nach unten und vorne öffnet. Es muss also ausreichend Platz für die 3 Lagen im ausgezogenen Zustand da sein.

For the side walls and the back of the chest I used parts of the Journal. When attaching the assembled boxes I had to make sure that there was enough space on the sides as well as considering the height as the mechanic opens from the top down and to the front. The 3 layers need extra space when open.

Im nächsten Schritt habe ich die Abdeckung aus dem Journal gebaut und mit Scharnieren fixiert. Dazu habe ich die Tafel mit den Zahnrädern ergänzt. Die Abdeckung bietet auf beiden Seiten Ablagefläche, der Aufbau muss höhenmässig so eingestellt werden, dass er beim Aufklappen nicht am Boden aufstösst.

The next step was to build the cover from the journal and fix it with hinges. I added the billboard and the gears. The cover provides you with a work and storage space on both sides. I just had to ensure that the Billboard does not touch the ground when tilted over.

Hier habe ich festgestellt, dass die Truhe nicht genügend Länge bot, da ich einen Griff an den Boxen angebracht hatte. Damit kann die Mechanik besser bedient werden. Also habe ich das ganze ein wenig mithilfe des Journals erweitert. Weiterhin sollte die Ablagefläche der aufgeklappten Abdeckung mehr Stabilität bekommen. Dafür habe ich den zusätzlichen Frontteil gebaut, der 3 Boxen zum Lagern hat und vorne in die Truhe auch optisch reinpasst. Zum Schluss habe ich alles noch ein wenig verfeinert und mit Utensilien wie dem Minibuch ergänzt, dass mit dem Needle Book Die gestanzt wurde.

At this point I realised that the Chest was not long enough to accommodate the handle which I fixed on the boxes for better handling. With the help of the journal I extended it. Furthermore I wanted to give the work and storage space of the cover more stability when tilted over. For this I build the front part containing 3 storage boxes to fit into the chest and give it an optical face to the front at the same time. The chest was given a fine tuning to round things off as well as some utensils like the mini book using the Needle Book Die.
